The Surprising Science of Happiness When people discuss happiness, they frequently refer to it as a search—a mission to discover something so elusive and out of reach that there are numerous theories about how to get it. Surprisingly, yet, it might be our freedom to select from among countless wonderful experiences in life that prevents us from being content. Dan Gilbert started his Ted talk by talking about the development of the human brain.  The speaker in Dan Gilbert's "Surprise Science of Pleasure" examines human happiness from a psychological and neurological perspective. In his studies, he found that humans could mentally test out situations before acting as a result of the prefrontal cortex. This distinguishes humans from other animals. This evolutionary adaption, though, is not without drawbacks. While it might seem that a lottery winner would be happier than a person who had just been paralyzed, a study found that one year later, both new paraplegics and lotter...

"BEAUTY IS IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER" There are about 7 billion people in the world, obviously, not all of these people will have the same opinions. What I consider beautiful may not be seen the same way by someone else. What is appealing to some is not appealing to the rest. For example, Mr. Zack finds math beautiful however, I personally do not think that it is. Because different things resonate with different people, there is no universally accepted definition of beauty.  They will only be drawn to you by people who recognize the inner beauty that is reflected in your eyes. External beauty does not appeal to everyone because true beauty comes from within. If you are kind to others and have good morals, you will appear more attractive.  Don Quixote was speaking to Sancho Panza in the Man of La Mancha novel. "Like beauty, my friend, 'tis in the eye of the beholder," he said while speaking to him. He was referring to a stunning young woman by the name of Aldon...

Lollipops and Leaders  People made leadership a larger-than-life concept that extended beyond them. Today, being a leader means being extraordinary and changing the world. The title of a leader is treated as something that we will one day deserve and that thinking that we can have it right now is seen as arrogance.  What we do not know is, everyone has already been a leader. How? Well first there are two questions we need to answer: What is a lollipop moment? A lollipop moment is one second - one word - one simple act of kindness, that changes someone’s life forever.   Do I have a lollipop moment? Yes, I do. At some point in my life, I struggled. I struggled so much that I shut everyone out and just stayed in my own little personal bubble for way too long. However, there was one and only one person that I would talk to. This guy had been my friend since KG1. Eventually, life got in the way and we both moved to different countries. Despite that, we stayed in tou...

The Power of Vulnerability

The Power of Vulnerability  From collecting data to turning them into stories,  BrenĂ©  Brown, an American professor/ researcher-storyteller, deserved to be voted one of Houston's most influential women. After 10 years of Brown being a social worker, she realized that connection is why we are here. While collecting research she stumbled upon a piece of research that radically expanded her perception.  While collecting research to understand human connection, Brown ran into shame. She then says that shame is caused by something we are all familiar with, vulnerability. Vulnerability basically makes us feel worthless like we are never and can never be enough. Personally, I hate feeling vulnerable because it makes me feel weak. However, I know that vulnerability should not be seen as a weakness but as a strength. After many long interviews, stories, and focus groups, Brown concluded that only one variable differentiates between people who have a strong sense of love...
